Without Spending All Your Time Writing
Kindle Vella is Amazon's new platform.
Readers can buy stories, one episode at a time.
Each episode must contain between 600 and 5,000 words.
So it's tempting to take an unpublished nonfiction book, split it into chapters with 600 - 1,000 words in each, and then publish each chapter as an episode, right?
Sadly, it won't work that way.
The thing is that the books on Vella are written in a particular way, or they won't get interested readers.
For one thing, you must "sell" each new episode in the previous one.
Think Netflix. What makes people binge series after series?
Something that arouses their curiosity, right? They MUST know what happens next.
And we usually don't have that kind of curiosity-builder inside our normal nonfiction books. People have bought the whole book. We assume they will keep on reading.
That's not the only difference. In fact, there are several you must know about before you start publishing.
Some will say “no.”
They look at it this way:
You’ll only get paid around $0.005 per 100 words.
I say this is a limited mindset. Vella offers a much bigger advantage than just getting paid $0.35 for a full story.
Advantages like:
I see Kindle Vella as a great opportunity for nonfiction writers.
You get all the above advantages AND get paid while you’re writing and learning.
Imagine that.
You have an idea, a vague idea perhaps, for a book you may want to write.
It’s in the self help niche. Or it’s a biography. Or maybe it’s about spirituality. At any rate, you’ve never written a book about that topic before.
And you wonder if you can do it.
And if it will sell.
Imagine that you can test your idea by spending only 15 minutes per day for a week.
By then, you’ll know whether your idea will float or sink.
You may even be gathering followers, weeks before you finish your book.
You may be making money, weeks before you finish your book.
And perhaps for the first time, you see yourself as a published author. You did it.
Your dream has finally come through. Without the anxiety. Without the endless worrying and speculation.
Now all you have to do is continue.
The "old" ways don't work on Vella.
You cannot add images or tables.
You must write in a particular way to get readers.
And you must leave your reader eager to unlock the following episode.
If you don't know how to do those things, you can forget about getting your books read on Vella.
You don't have to write long books with hundreds of pages. In fact, shorter is better.
You don't have to bend over your keyboard for hours just to produce one chapter. Fifteen minutes will often do it.
You don't have to pay for expensive covers. A picture will do.
You don't have to spend hours writing a description for your book. A few words are enough.
And you don't have to think long about each word you put down. They will start flowing from your fingers, once you know the right way to do this.

PPS Yes, you can publish nonfiction on Vella, but it's very different from publishing nonfiction directly to DKP.
If you live in the US, you can start right away while the competition is ridiculously low. If you live outside, like me, you can prepare and have your Vella books ready the moment Amazon opens up for us.
